Dear Yuletide Author,

Hello! Thank you SO MUCHfor offering to write a story for me! <3 I'm gonna blather on at you for quite some time, but rest assured, optional details are optional and I'm going to be thrilled to receive a story about any of these characters in any of these fandoms.

My General Fic Likes/Dislikes

I tend to favor character studies and/or stories that expand the setting's world-building. I love it when authors fill in the gaps left in the main narrative, whether it's by furnishing back-stories, writing stories that take before or after canon, or through slice-of-life moments while the narrative focus is off on bigger events (even if this is done with OCs or in a different time/place than the main story). I love how stories about side/minor characters allow you to look at the narrative from a new, different angle and/or to go off on tangents completely unrelated to the main narrative but within the same world.
Of course, if you like writing plotty fic that involves lots of cast members, go right ahead.

Though I am a big shipper, many of my prompts for this exchange are not particularly shippy, though by all means, ship away if you are so inclined. Just please keep in mind that I'd rather you not include explicit sex scenes. I'm also not really into dark stories. I'm not by any means saying I need a fluffy, happy story, but I'm not a big fan of angst-for-the-sake-of-angst or angst-ridden tropes like hurt/comfort, major character death, or dark AUs.

For more information about stories I've written and stories I've bookmarked, check out my profile on
A03. I'm also Lionteacher on tumblr.

My Requested Fandoms:

Compendium of World Knowledge - John Hodgman
Any Character
Wow, it's really hard to overstate just how attached I am to John Hodgman's fake encyclopedias.  I love the way he wryly spins historical facts and absurd inventions together into always hilarious and sometimes very poignant little versions of our world and history.  I'd be happy for either additional or expanded encyclopedia entries written in Hodgman's style or stories written within the world created within these books from the perspective of any of these characters.

I'm asking for any character in this fandom, because I just want there to be more Areas of My Expertise in this world.  But if you'd really like to know, I'd be particularly happy to receive a story about either:

Actuaries--tell me more about their guilds, their secret rituals, the fate of that one actuary who was expelled from Omaha (off trying to start his life over again in a new city but haunted by the knowledge of his predicted death), the august history of the Actuarial Games (a thing I just made up, but want to know more about), the "real" history behind actuarial guild tattoos, ANYTHING.

or

The Hobo Wars: Walker Evans: Artist by Day, Hobo Hunter by Night; the great rivalry between Walker Evans and Joey Stink-Eye Smiles (their mutual obsession, their hatred verging on love); The Experiences of Hobo Joe Junkpan as Secretary of the Treasury in the guise of Ogden Mills and the tension this episode caused between Joey Stink-Eye Smiles and Hobo Joe Junkpan.

Also, there are too many dudes in the hobo wars, give me some lady hobos and lady hobo hunters. And while we're at it, who's to say Hobo Joe Junkpan wasn't really Hobo Jo Junkpan forced by historical prejudices to pretend to be both Ogden Mills and a man?  Woe, woe upon our society cursed with such virulent anti-hobo sentiment and misogyny.  Is it any wonder the hobos left us for the stars? What of the rumors that after the "Ogden Mills incident," Hobo Jo could not rid herself of her desire to meddle in non-hobo politics, even during the increasingly anti-hobo presidency of FDR?  And what of the rumored romance between Hobo Jo and Frances Perkins? If tales of their forbidden love are as baseless as mainstream historians insist then why, why was Frances Perkins so rarely seen after the hobos left for the stars, her appearances always foreshadowed by a strange comet streaking across the DC sky?

See? See how much I love this fandom? I can't even keep myself from starting fic in my request prompt :DDD

Imperial Radch Series by Ann Leckie
Character: Mercy of Kalr

I received and wrote fic in this fandom for Yuletide last year, but I'm requesting it again because I love this fandom, and this character so much!

I find Mercy of Kalr endlessly fascinating and I would love to have a story, any story, from her* perspective. She's been through so much, both before and during the second two books, I'd love to see any of those events from her perspective.

If character studies aren't really your thing, I'd equally be happy to receive a plotty, post-canon Mercy of Kalr POV story--setting up the Republic of Two Systems, interacting with other ships, Athoek Station, her crew, whatever. Mercy of Kalr just got a whole bunch of agency, I'd love to see her using it!  If this plot appeals to you but you don't feel up to the task of writing a story from a ship's perspective--you can write it from Breq, or Seivarden, or Tisarwat, or I guess any of the Mercy of Kalr crew's perspective, just so long as there's lots of "ships are people!" politics and love for Mercy of Kalr involved.

Side note--I am also totally in love with the Breq/Mercy of Kalr/Seivarden OT3 relationship that starts getting established in Ancillary Mercy, so I'd be happy to see that included, just please respect Breq's canonically stated asexuality. There are so few asexual characters out there, and fic about asexual characters that ends up being all about getting the asexual character to have sex with their partner REALLY bothers me (and would totally be against canon in this case since all parties involved have stated that they are down with their relationship being about snuggles and feelings).

*I know ships are primarily referred to as "it" throughout the series, but the end of the trilogy firmly establishes their personhood, so please refer to Mercy of Kalr as "she" just like all the other people in the book. In fact, I think Mercy of Kalr struggling with her new identity and agency, with this very pronoun shift, would be a great focus for a fic!

Anathem - Neal Stephenson
Fraa Orolo
(Cord)
I would love to see the world of this book expanded, whether that's through backstory, or side-character POV on major events, or a quiet moment before or during the plot of the book. I requested Fraa Orolo, because he's just such a dear character and I would love to hear something in his voice--a slice-of-life in the Math, or him waxing poetic about some aspect of monastic life/philosophy/mathematics/chant. Or maybe a scene between him and some of the other characters in the novel but from his POV. Or some missing scene during the immediate aftermath of his expulsion from the Math, for instance. You get the idea, just anything Fraa Orolo.

Alternatively, though I officially only nominated Fraa Orolo, I'd be equally happy for a story about Cord.  Same deal--backstory, slice of life, or anything from the novel from her perspective.

Drunk History RPF
Lin-Manuel Miranda (Drunk History RPF)
Listen, a decade before I had way too many feels about Hamilton the Musical, I had way too many feels about the very first drunk history episode, which was also about Alexander Hamilton. Lin-Manuel Miranda appearing on Drunk History for a second Alexander Hamilton episode allows me to have both those sets of feels at the same time.

Lin-Manuel Miranda is an adorable, puppy-eyed human being with an incredible voice and a well-documented crush on Alexander Hamilton.  Mark Gagliardi is an adorable, puppy-eyed human being with an incredible voice and a well-documented crush on Alexander Hamilton. We know they got drunk together and talked about their mutual Hamilton feels. What if, let us imagine, they also snuggled and complimented each other, and maybe sang some showtunes?  Really, that's really all I want, just a couple of giddy, drunk, sweetie pies crushing on our ten dollar founding father (and maybe each other).

Once again thank you so much for writing a story for me! I can't wait to read it <3

<3 Yuletide <3 Part I
books
lionteacher
I was away visiting friends for Christmas and now that I'm home I'm busy packing all my stuff up for my mid-week move, but let me just pause and say YULETIDE! <3333

I can't tell you what I wrote for Yuletide until after reveals later this week, but OMG, drop everything and go read the two (two!) gifts I received.

I received a lovely Imperial Radch fic. It's Mercy of Kalr P.O.V., post-canon OT3 which is EXACTLY what I wanted.  Seriously, it's so lovely, go read it!

Always the Next Morning and the Next
Most of the time, when a ship loves a captain, or any soldier, it’s because they treat us well, because they make requests rather than barking orders, because they speak to us with respect, sometimes even with interest. They are often warm, to varying degrees, and often open, also to varying degrees, but mostly they are just...good. Easy to work for, pleasant to coexist with, willing to be cared for.

Actually, after you read that, go read everything in the Imperial Radch tag. I wouldn't normally blanket rec a fandom, but there are only 11 stories, most of them are 1000-2000 words and they are all very good.  I will be more specific when I get around to writing a proper Yuletide recs post.

And then, and then! I got a second gift!  GUYS, somebody wrote a 19th Century Paleontology RPF BALLAD for me!!! It is hilarious and perfect. Even if you're not familiar with the Bone Wars, just read it (no canon needed)!  I mean, just look at these tags:

Poetry, Ballads, Frenemies, Skull Theft, Paleontology, Elasmosaurs, Facial Hair

The Ballad of Marsh and Cope
The tale of the frustrated desires and mighty facial hair of Cope and Marsh in ballad form. Earlier drafts of this included the line 'precious cranial porridge'. You have been warned.

Okay, back to packing for me!   crossposted from caminante.dreamwidth.org

The Well of Hamilton Feels
books
lionteacher
Hey there, internet. I'm so happy you fell down the same well of feels that [personal profile] eccentric_hat  and I were lucky enough to fall down at just the right time (aka, the time when you could still buy tickets to see the show).  No, I'm still not giving you a proper recap of the Trip to See Hamilton, because, well, even though it's been six weeks, I am still grappling with my feels.  But here, have a link spam of Hamilton things I've been accumulating instead:

The Basics
The 10 minute clip of performances from the show (Ham B Roll) that keeps getting taken down from the internet. Why yes, I did download it before it got taken off vimeo. I have no uploaded it myself, but with a password (password hamilton)

Lin-Manuel Miranda's White House performance from 2009  AKA literally the only thing Eccentric Hat and I had to fuel our enthusiasm for this project for ages before we went to see it in September.

Oh, also, after we'd bought the tickets, but back when we were still having to explain what this show was and why we were excited about it and that no, "Hip hop musical about Alexander Hamilton" wasn't a joke. There was this piece on CBS Sunday Morning A Founding Father Takes the Stage

<3 Leslie Odom Jr. Great Burr Analysis on Tumblr

Great clips from #Ham4Ham (the peformances the cast have been giving at ticket raffles)

Other videos

Got Hamilton? AKA the parody of a 20 year old milk comericial that we all needed

Not exactly relevant, but, well, if you've stuck with me this long, you're probably interested in this clip of Lin-Manuel Miranda kissing Jonathan Groff because the internet told him to  (no, really, it's exactly what it says on the tin)

Annotated Lyrics
I put this at the bottom because you are gonna get lost in it http://genius.com/albums/Lin-manuel-miranda/Hamilton-original-broadway-cast-recording

Okay, that's all for now for Hamilton musical feels for now, but here's a little epilogue.  My friend recently lured me into actually tweeting with my "I made this account so nobody steals my name but don't use it" twitter account by shouting out to me that it was "time for Hamilton feels." To which, I could only reply:

1) Hamilton feels? You mean like this?

2) Or this:

3) Surely you don't mean this?

PS-Did I mention that Eccentric_hat and I SAW HAMILTON? We totally saw Hamilton! And it was the best.

Yuletide Letter

Dear Yuletide Author,

Hello! Thank you so much for offering to write a story for me! <3 I've read Yuletide for many years but this is the first time I've worked up the courage to participate and I'm really excited! I'm gonna blather on at you for quite some time, but rest assured, optional details are optional and I'm going to be thrilled to receive a story about any of these characters in any of these fandoms.

Also, I only nominated one character per fandom on the request page to facilitate matching, but I'm going to list other characters in parenthesis in this letter that I would have listed if requests worked on an "or" basis rather than an "and" basis.  Meaning, for example, I'm listing 4 characters for Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell, but I do NOT expect you to include all of them in your story, pick any one of them you want! In fact, as you'll see from my general fic likes below, I tend to favor stories that focus in on one character's experience. Of course, if you like writing plotty fic that involves lots of cast members, go right ahead.
Onwards, to the details!Collapse )

역시 빅뱅이 짱이야!

Hi all. So, last weekend I went to New York to introduce two of my BFFs to each other. They also happen to be the two biggest kpop fans I know. We also happened to be meeting up to GO TO A BIG BANG CONCERT! It was, well, I'll just say it, it was Fantastic Baby!

I owe you a whole recap of the wonderful weekend, and I plan to write that either later today or tomorrow. It always seemed like such a shame that Kristin, my neighbor of two years in Gwangju and my much referenced "Kpop mentor" did not overlap with hestialuna in Korea because, oh the kpop fangirl spirals they would have gone on together. But now this situation has been remedied.

We were never able to get Big Bang tickets when we lived in Korea, but in the end we all felt like it was actually better getting to see them in America. Why? Well, partially because nostalgia for our old lives in Korea made it even more meaningful but, mostly, because WE GOT TO HEAR THEM SPEAK IN ENGLISH!

Like I said, I'll give a full report of the "Let's Pretend We're in Seoul!" weekend later, but for now, have some videos. All videos taken by Kristin, who a) has a better phone than I do and b) had enough sense to take videos!

Here's a tiny clip of Fatastic Baby. Good thing none of us have seizure conditions, because this concert was 2 solid hours of dozens of spot lights, lasers and INDOOR FIREWORKS

Onwards, to the English introductions! AKA Taeyang is such a ham and Daesung is secretly a total weirdo (an adorable weirdo, but a weirdo nonetheless). Fastforward to minute 4:00 if you need proof.

English goodbyes
Taeyang once again being a complete ham. A "tiny little hearts!" obsessed ham.
Top got all shy and switched back over to speaking in Korean and it was SUPER ADORBS (1:30)
Daesung, I do not even know what to do with you. WERE YOU SECRETLY ALWAYS THE WEIRD ONE!?!
Seungri, that is not your song (6:40). Are you at the wrong concert?
G-Dragon (7:00) You know you're my forever fav, even if you were shockingly normal during these goodbyes. I guess you can't always be the weird one. I guess sometimes Daesung needs to let his freak flag fly and it was very generous of you to let him be the weirdo at this concert. At least we'll always have that giant, fuzzy orange earflap hat you wore halfway through the concert. Never change, you weird elf from outerspace, never change.

Books Recs. Or Rather, Comic Recs
books

Last Thursdayikel89  left me a perfectly timed "what have you been reading lately?" comment. It was perfectly timed because it reminded me that several items I'd been eagerly waiting for had been released on Wednesday and I needed to swing by the comic book store and pick up my holds before I ran off to New York for the weekend.  So yes, this is going to be a comics only answer to her question because last week was a good week for comics!

In case any of my international buddies have trouble finding these, I'm linking to these books for sale via bookdepository.com because they provide free worldwide shipping. You can also buy digital copies of all of these on comixology

Ms. Marvel  by G. Willow Wilson
Marvel Comics presents the all-new MS. MARVEL, the ground breaking heroine that has become an international sensation! Kamala Khan is just an ordinary girl from Jersey City--until she is suddenly empowered with extraordinary gifts. But who truly is the all-new Ms. Marvel?

If you're not already reading Ms. Marvel, you should be. Everyone should be.  It is so sweet, and engaging and hilarious and pop-culture savvy and just, gah, its the best thing, go read it!  Even if you're all "oh, I don't read superhero comics..." read this one! It is as much, if not more, about being a teenager, about being a millennial, about being the child of immigrants, etc. as it is about being a superhero.  Have I not convinced you yet? The cover of issue #7 is a picture of Kamala taking a selfie with Wolverine and the issue summary begins, "Kamala may be fan-girling out when her favorite (okay maybe Top Five) super hero shows up for some help, but that won’t stop her from protecting her hometown." You know you love her already. READ THIS SERIES!  Good news for people late to this party you can buy the first 10 issues collected in  Vol. 1 and Vol 2, but beware, you're going to love it so much you'll end up buying the monthly issues after that!

Nimona by Noelle Stevenson
Nimona is an impulsive young shape-shifter with a knack for villainy. Lord Ballister Blackheart is a villain with a vendetta. As sidekick and supervillain, Nimona and Lord Blackheart are about to wreak some serious havoc. Their mission: prove to the kingdom that Sir Ambrosius Goldenloin and his buddies at the Institution of Law Enforcement and Heroics aren't the heroes everyone thinks they are. Nemeses! Dragons! Science! Symbolism! All these and more await in this brilliantly subversive, sharply irreverent epic from Noelle Stevenson, based on her award-winning web comic.

Like just about everyone on tumblr, I've been following Stevenson as gingerhaze for several years. And now her kickass webcomic Nimona is out as a graphic novel!  DROP EVERYTHING AND GO READ NIMONA.  This story starts off all silly and then wham!, so many feels.  Stevenson deploys ALL THE TROPES and lovingly and humorously twists so many of them--The villain is the hero, the sidekick is the boss, the princess is the dragon, etc. The result is a story that feels both instantly recognizable and refreshingly new.  Did I mention funny and sweet? BUY IT. Afterwards, go read Lumberjanes (also by Stevenson).

Marceline Gone Adrift by Meredith Gran
Marceline is on a rampage for mysterious reasons, and the kingdom of Ooo is desperately scrambling to stop her. In trying to save both Ooo and Marceline herself, Princess Bubblegum accidentally propels Marceline into the farthest reaches of space...and strips her of her powers! Guilt-ridden, Princess Bubblegum sets off on a space rescue that’ll test the power of her mind...as well as the power of friendship.

Do you wish that Adventure Time was 90% Marceline and Princess Bubblegum? Then this is the comic for you.  This story is currently on issue 5 of a 6 issue run, so you'll have to wait until...I'm guessing October-ish for a collected volume to get released.  In the mean time, if you don't want to buy single issues but still want more Marceline and Princess Bubblegum in your life, you're in luck. Check out Marceline and the Scream Queens (by the same author) in which Marceline forms a band and P. B. is their manager.  PS--If you're like, "oh, I always mean to get in on the Marceline/Princess Bubblegum wonderfulness but I haven't watched enough Adventure Time!"  you really just need a basic familiarity with the Adventure Time world and fondness for these two characters in particular to enjoy these stories.  Basically, just watch "What was Missing" and you're good to go^^ crossposted from caminante.dreamwidth.org

Wandering Across America Photo Post

There's a massive snow storm so I'v spent the morning drinking tea, staring out the window and finally finishing my "Wandering Across America 2014" photo album. The snow shows no sign of stopping, so I figured I might as well stay in photo mode and make a highlights post. The sheer volume of photos was pretty overwhelming, so for this post I've limited myself to 1 photo per location. This is no where near a comprehensive list of the places I visited, and some of the locations demand photo posts of their own--it was particularly difficult to choose just one photo out of the hundreds of photos I took in Glacier National Park--but this is a good start.

About two weeks ago one of my best friends sent me an email saying, among many other things, that she'd recently started reading One Hundred Years of Solitude at my suggestion. I was ridiculously pleased that she was enjoying it and excited for her. Oh man, to be reading that book for the first time, half not even knowing what you're reading, just knowing that it's unbelievably beautiful and breathtakingly profound.

Then yesterday on tumblr I was so excited to see someone on my dash posting quotes from Marquez, as I am whenever I see a Marquez quote. But then I noticed that multiple people were posting them, and I had the sinking realization of "oh no, he must have died."

I. I actually cried a bit and sat around feeling vaguely sad and unable to do anything other than think about his novels and short stories for the better part of the night.

I have a mug in my cupboard that has the first line of One Hundred Years of Solitude on it. It has many other quotes on it, it's a "Great First Lines in Literature" mug, but I bought it because of the Marquez quote. I did not need this mug, I had too many mugs already, and bringing a coffee mug from America to South Korea and then back to America again the following year is pretty ridiculous, but I bought it anyway because of this quote:

"Many years later, as he faced the firing squad, Colonel Aureliano Buendia was to remember that distant afternoon when his father took him to discover ice."

Every time I read that line it takes me back to the first time I read this book. Because even though it was years ago, I still remember opening this book for the first time, snuggled up under my comforter in bed in the first apartment I lived in after college and reading that opening sentence and thinking "Oh wow, this is going to be a good book. I have absolutely no idea what that means but I I really want to know."

I love Marquez so much and falling in love with One Hundred Years of Solitude kick-started my interest in visiting Latin America. I don't honestly know who I'd be if I hadn't gone to Guatemala in 2008. It's a trip that has influenced the course my life has taken since then in several regards. And, in turn, I absolutely wouldn't have taken that trip had I not gone on a trip to rural Costa Rica in 2007 and so much of my motivation in wanting to go on that first trip came from loving Marquez.

To this day, I  don't know how to disentangle my love for Latin America from my love for One Hundred Years of Solitude and my love for Latin America has had such an impact on my life. Would I ever have started teaching English-as-a-second-language if not for Marquez? More than likely not. And who would I even be, in that case, without having spent two years in Americorps and three years in Korea?

As I was scrolling through all the Marquez quotes on tumblr yesterday and "liking" everything in sight, it occurred to me that I was liking a bunch of quotes in the original Spanish and that I wouldn't be able to understand them in Spanish if not for Marquez.

I studied Spanish in high school and for a year of college, just to fulfill my language requirement, but I wasn't passionate about really learning it until I read One Hundred Years of Solitude.  I'm still not proficient enough to really read that book in Spanish, but that's how, more often than not, I state my Spanish-language goal. "Someday, I'd like to be able to confidently read One Hundred Years of Solitude in the original."

That goal still seems far off, especially after three years in Korea without any Spanish practice, but I'm hoping to spend a significant part of 2015 in Latin America, so perhaps I'll achieve it in the not-too-distant future after all. But, in the mean time, at least I can enjoy short passages and quotes in the original. So, I'll close with this Marquez quote and leave it to you to find the translation.

"La vida no es la que uno vivió, sino la que uno recuerda, y cómo la recuerda para contarla."

So thank you, Gabriel Garcia Marquez, for providing part of the story that I tell about myself.

Spring!

lionteacher
I know it's rather cruel of me to be posting about how gorgeous the spring here has been so far when I know that it's still probably rather wintry where most of you are but I've been wanting to post some of the flower pictures I've taken over the last two weeks and today was just too nice not to mention.

It must have been 65 degrees out, sunny and breezy all day. I had skype dates all morning but after wards I grabbed some gimbap for lunch and ate it at the riverside park a few blocks from my apartment. After that I sat in the dappled shade under a blooming magnolia tree and wrote in my journal for about an hour. I mean seriously, it was a perfect afternoon.

I've been back in my apartment for the last few hours with the windows wide open getting some chores done but the weather's still making me outrageously happy.

I'm going to the Jinhae Cherry Blossom Festival this upcoming Sunday and the bamboo forest in Damyang the following weekend so I'm sure I'll be posting lots of nature photos in April. Spring! Eeee!
